A Chip+PIN credit card provides you enhanced security for all your domestic and international transactions, in line with the best global practices on security of transactions. The Chip+PIN credit card is less vulnerable to skimming and virtually impossible to tamper with.

What is the Chip+PIN Credit Card and how does it work?

When you use a Chip+PIN credit card at a POS terminal, the POS machine will prompt you for your PIN to be entered, you are required to enter the Credit Card ATM PIN in the terminal and complete the transaction.

Why I am being issued a Chip+PIN credit card?

As per the recent RBI Mandate, all customers who have used their credit card at an international POS terminal will have to be re-carded with a Chip+PIN credit card.

What is Chip+PIN credit card?

A chip is a small microchip embedded in your credit card. It is encrypted so transactions are more secure on the card. The Chip+PIN card is a superior level of security on your card, in line with best global practice of security of transactions. A pin is encrypted on the chip which is only known to the card holder.

How is the Chip+PIN card more secure?

Chip+PIN Credit Card processes your data with unparalleled security and it is virtually impossible to copy or tamper with. It also protects your card against counterfeiting and skimming.

I already have a Chip card, how different is this Chip+PIN credit card?

The Chip+PIN will provide additional security on your credit card via the PIN encrypted on the chip. The PIN will be known only to you and you need to enter the PIN at a POS terminal and authenticate the transaction.

Can I decide not to take this Chip+PIN credit card?

This is a directive from RBI and you are required to accept this card.

Do I have to DIP my card or swipe my card?

The Chip+PIN credit card needs to be dipped and not swiped. If you swipe the card, the POS machine will prompt for it to be dipped.

What happens if the POS terminal does not have DIP unit, can I not use the card at all?

Your Chip+PIN credit card also has a magnetic stripe. In case the terminal does not have a DIP slot, the card can be swiped and the transaction can go through the regular signature mode.

When I dip the card in the POS machine, why am I being asked for PIN?

In order to provide an additional level of security, your HDFC Bank Card is equipped with a Chip+PIN facility wherein you would be requested to provide your PIN to authenticate your transaction. Please enter your credit card ATM PIN when promoted for.

Will I be asked for PIN at every POS terminals be it domestic or International?

If the POS terminal (domestic or International) is enabled for PIN authentication, you will be asked for PIN. You will need to enter your credit card ATM PIN and complete the transaction.

In one of the successful transactions, my card was DIPPED at a certain merchant location and the POS terminal did not ask for a PIN. Was my transaction secure?

This is because the POS terminal was not enabled to ask for a PIN. However, the transaction was secure since your card is a Chip+PIN card.

Will I be asked for PIN if the merchant swipes the Chip+PIN card at the POS terminal instead of DIPPING It?

The CHIP card needs to be dipped and not swiped. If you swipe, the POS terminal will prompt for it dipped. Request the merchant to DIP the card. If the POS terminal is PIN enabled, you will have to enter the PIN to complete the transaction.

What if I have forgotten my PIN or enter an incorrect PIN?

You will be given 3 attempts to enter the correct PIN, post which your transaction will get declined. If you have forgotten your PIN, please request for a duplicate ATM PIN for your card.

I did 3 unsuccessful PIN attempts at POS terminal and transaction was declined. I remember my PIN now, can I try using the credit card at the POS machine or is it necessary for me to get a duplicate PIN.

If you remember the PIN you can use your credit card at the POS machine. Please request the merchant to remove the card and dip again.

I did 3 unsuccessful PIN attempts are made at POS terminal and transaction was declined. I remember my PIN now, can I try using the credit card at the ATM?

Yes. The system will be able recognize that the entry is coming from ATM and not POS. The customer will be allowed to make 3 more attempts via ATM.

Will the Chip+PIN credit card reach me in de-activated status? If so how do I activate the card?

The Chip+PIN credit card will reach you in activated status. You can start using the card once you receive the PIN.

Will I receive the PIN along with the card?

No, the card and PIN will be sent to you separately.

If Will this new Chip+PIN card be an LTF card?

No, the pricing will be applicable as your old card.

Is it mandatory for me to enter the PIN at the POS terminal? Can I use this card without entering the PIN?

No, you cannot. When the POS terminal is prompting you for a PIN, you have to enter to complete the transaction.

I have two add-on card holders, will they also get Chip+PIN credit card.

Yes, they will.

Will the PIN be different for the add-on card holders?

Yes the add-on card will have a different PIN.

If the add-on card holder has forgotten or lost their PIN, can the use the Primary card holder to complete the transaction?

No, they need to enter only their PIN. The transaction will get declined if they use an incorrect PIN.

How will this work for Online/Internet transactions? Will I be asked for PIN?

No, for online/E-com transactions there are no changes to the existing process. You will not be asked for PIN.

Is my online transaction secure when I am not being asked for a PIN?

For online transactions you will go through the Verfied by VISA/Mastercard Secure code channel. This itself is an additional authentication for your transactions.

How long will my old card be active?

Your old card will be active for 60 days from the date of set-up of new card.

I have received the Chip+Pin credit card, Can I use my old card till its validity?

Yes you can. However, we suggest you to start using the new card on its receipt.

If I use my old card, will I be asked for PIN?

No, you will not be asked for PIN. The transaction will go through the regular signature mode as you do today.

I have a debit card with HDFC Bank, if I have forgotten my credit card PIN, can I use my debit card PIN?

No, you need to only use the credit card ATM PIN.

How to request for duplicate PIN?

You can request for duplicate PIN by either calling the customer service team or through Netbanking.

When will I get my duplicate PIN?

The PIN will reach you within 7-10 working days.

Do I have to pay a fee to get the Chip+PIN credit card.

There is no additional fee required to have Chip+PIN credit card.

Will my card number change when I get new Chip+PIN credit card?

Yes, the card number will change.

Will the reward points be converted to my new card?

Yes, the reward points will be converted.

I have COC/DAE on my existing card. Will this be moved to my new card or should I have to close the EMI on my old card?

The COC/DAE will be converted to the new card.

Will this new Chip+PIN card be an LTF card?

No, the pricing will be applicable as per your old card.

I have registered for Netbanking and Smart Pay on my existing card? Will this be moved to the new card?

Yes. Your new card will be auto-registered for Netbanking if your old card was registered.

Smart Pay registrations will also be moved to your new card.
